Question #232 for conversation: Amateur radio “every day carry” (EDC)… What do you have with you every day?
(If interested in submitting a weekly question, email n5zkf@arrl.net)
Don Ling (WB5CKO)
- Henry Menefee (W5RAS) suffered stroke on 2025-07-04
- Fell and broke several vertebrae
- He’s in Rm 309 at St. Joseph Manor, 2345 Manor Dr, Bryan [Google Maps]
- Not doing well: semi-paralyzed, pain, can’t really talk, anxiety
- Go and visit him right now
- He’s never been what I’d consider “fragile;” it was odd to see him in this condition
- Moved from Madisonville to Bryan and set up two-way carrier: first two-way radio presence in the area
Rich Rychetsky (W5SON)
- Brian and I are testing C4FM/System Fusion on the W5BCS repeater
- Got a new Yaesu HT radio
- Feel free to join in!
- If you’re carrying an HT, how do you do carry it without it getting in the way?
- N5ZKF: I have a hot spot and would love to join in!
David Bailey (K5DKB)
-
I carry Tidradio TD-H3
- USB-C chargeable
- Cheap! It’s not the end of the world if it gets lost or walks off!
-
On the side of my backpack
-
3 radios that I carry each day:
- Tidradio H8
- Bluetooth programmable
- Baofeng DM-32 DMR radio
- Baofeng BF-F8HP Pro
- Puts out 12 W
- Made by American branch of Baofeng: better QA
- V85 Antenna is the best cheap antenna I’ve used
- Tidradio H8
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- In my daily carry:
- Name-brand HT, digital-capable
- Handheld scanner for local and neighboring county frequencies
- Spare batteries for receiver and HT
- Spare higher-gain antenna
- SMA-to-BNC Adapter
- Amateur Radio “greeting card”
- Other gear in the car: other radios/scanners, HF ground vertical antenna, etc.
