Question #199 for conversation: Which networked digital radio mode(s) is/are your favorite?
(If interested in submitting a weekly question, email n5zkf@arrl.net)
Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)
- Of those modes, I’ve only used D-STAR
- “CQ” groups or point-to-point
- Interesting that it has the ability to call a single station directly no matter where they are
- The system remembers where their signal was last received and re-broadcasts directly to there
- Internet gateway, local repeater
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- Last call last week… Maybe some folks don’t know about it
- Said a few words at the last club meeting
- Final attempt to contact someone recently deceased
- Call them 3 times, wait for response, announce “silent key” after not hearing back.
- Give a brief bio if available
- A way to memorialize their presence on the air as ham radio operators
- First responders who use a lot of structured communications have similar rituals
- If a ham radio operator you know has passed and has ties to the local area, please let me know at n5zkf@arrl.net
- KX8V: My wife recently passed on 2024-09-04 - Alice Lucille Pears (KD8CWR)
- N5ZKF: Will honor her at start of next net
Ron Estes (KJ5EFO)
- Don’t have a radio that I’m using, but I do enjoy listening to the All-Star repeater system outside of Houston
- Fun to hear Alaska net and east coast nets
- All just linked repeaters, local one is “South Coast Reflector”
- KA5AIR Repeater is local on Skyline Communications tower
- N5ZKF: ham radio port of asterisk VoIP protocol
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- I enjoy the TGIF nets on DMR and sometimes check in
- Texas Lone Star DMR repeater - Talk group 2
Buy / Sell
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- MFJ 4230 MVP adjustable switching power supply
- Still relatively new
- 25 A, 4-16 V
- 30 A surge capacity
- 2 pairs of Anderson Power Pole connectors on the back
- $150-ish range, make me an offer (maybe $100) at n5zkf@arrl.net if interested
Information Exchange
Rich Rychetsky (W5SON)
- Lesson learned: you never know who you could spark an interest in ham radio
- Be ready to share your “elevator pitch”
- Had that moment with Gabriel Rodriguez, a friend of my son
- I learned that he took it to heart and just passed all 3 exams!
- N5ZKF: I have several info cards that I’ll hand out if anyone asks
Closing Remarks
- W5AC is participating in School Club Roundup competition.
- Give them a call to help them get points!
- Search for “W5AC” on https://dxsummit.fi to see if they’ve been spotted by anyone
