Question #197 for conversation: How do you deal with noise (and reducing it)?
(If interested in submitting a weekly question, email n5zkf@arrl.net)
Bill Rose (K5WTR)
- Hurricane Watch Net
- 14.325 MHz LSB (daytime)
- 7.268 MHz LSB (nighttime)
- Milton expected to make landfall tomorrow
Lorna Flansburg (KI5FIZ)
- Robertson County ARES meeting this weekend:
- 2024-10-12 09:30
- Franklin Fire Station on Glass St
- We’ll discuss programming radios
- J-Pole antenna group build
Matt Robinson (W5XMR)
- Fighting noise on HF from solar array/controllers
- Ferrite chokes from Palomar Engineers
- Significantly reduced noise
Travis Scott (KI5TMS)
- I have noise on 2 m coming from a new-ish computer’s power supply
- KG5SDF:
- I’ve dealt with this before, especially stopping it at the device itself
- Make sure openings on the device itself are as small as possible
- You want to create a Faraday cage around the electronics inside
- Put ferrite chokes on everything that goes in and out of device
- As many turns as possible
- Maybe after-meeting presentation?
Robert Carter (NC5R)
- Note on Palomar Engineers
- Attended presentation from Bob on noise about a year ago
- Not all ferrite beads are created equally
- Inexpensive ones on Amazon may not actually cancel noise on the desired frequency
- Make sure you’re getting the right ones: contact them first!
Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)
- Atmospheric audio noise reduction:
- Pass Band Filters - cut out high and low
- Noise Reducer - attempt to reduce white noise
- Noise Blanker - cut out pulse-type interference
- Notch Filter - reduce “whistle” noise on a single frequency
- Attenuation / Pre-amp - reduce or boost of signal prior to filtering
- Check the documentation for your radio!
Jonathan Graham (KD5GG)
- Icom IC-7610
- Filtering systems on modern radios are indeed advanced!
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- Report from Belton Ham Expo
- Saw a lot of familiar faces
- Lots of fun and interesting equipment for sale
- Noise reduction:
- Phasing noise reduction unit that operates at RF level
- Two antennas: one from signal, another just for noise
- By adjusting the phase of the noise antenna’s signal, it can cancel out localized noise
Buy / Sell
Vic Pears (KX8V)
- Looking for signal report on a different radio
- N5ZKF: Signal is great, but mic gain might be a little high
Information Exchange
Jonathan Graham (KD5GG)
- 10 m has been open in the afternoon lately
- Contacted someone in Quebec using AM
Matt Robinson (W5XMR)
- Need help fixing MFJ antenna analyzer
- N5ZKF: Might try calling up MFJ
