Question #145 for conversation: Please tell us about your experience with CHIRP.
(If interested in submitting a weekly question, email n5zkf@arrl.net)
Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)
- Have used CHIRP to program Baofeng radios before
- Let me know if interested in getting the spreadsheet of repeaters and simplex frequencies
- Local plan put together by local ARES group
Brandon Bartlett (KG5LYN)
- Always make sure to download the radio first and save a copy.
- Sometimes there are nuances with settings, etc.; it’s good to have a “clean slate”
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- Have a couple of non-major-brand-name radios (Baofeng, Tytera, Anytone, etc.)
- Often more intuitive than using the built-in menu system to program the radio
- Some manufacturers (esp. Yaesu) discourage the use of CHIRP and use their own or partner software instead
- If you brick your radio, it probably will not be covered under warranty!
