Question #114 for conversation (courtesy of K5ZY): What do you use to clean old radio equipment?
(If interested in submitting a weekly question, email n5zkf@arrl.net)
Ron Hambric (N5SBN)
- ARES net this evening
- 443.425 MHz FM (KD5DLW) repeater
- 20:30 or after this net
- shouldn’t be too long
Jim Hanks Jr. (W5CYN)
- Robertson Co. ARES net
- Thursday Evening 19:00
- 146.960 MHz FM (W5KVN) repeater
- Don’t know an answer to the question, but interested in answer
Matthew Barry (KG5LYE)
- interested in knowing what other people use
- I’ve used compressed air to blow out dusty computer equipment
- static-free cloth to get the stuff that’s really stuck on there
John Walpole (K5ZY)
- I use compressed air to blow out dust
- To clean cases:
- Tuff Stuff
- ArmorAll cleaning wipes
- Stainless Steel cleaner
- soft brush, lint-free towels
- N5ZKF on Brushes:
- paintbrush
- makeup brush
David Vickers (KI5WEH)
- some tips from cleaning out electronics in my day:
- don’t use chlorides, halides, ionic compounds, or corrosive materials that could etch away at circuit material
- e.g., anything with salt in it
- use isopropyl alcohol or (H)CFCs as a solvent to clean out any organic matter
- distilled water
- don’t use chlorides, halides, ionic compounds, or corrosive materials that could etch away at circuit material
Bill Rose (K5WTR)
- (Re: K5ZY) Zep stainless steel polish
- test plastics first: some dissolve in alcohol or react with other solvents
Paul Bilke (KF5WGJ)
- Note: “cans of [compressed] air” aren’t just cans of air
- can be very flammable or otherwise harmful
- Retrobright Hydrogen Peroxide can turn “old white” plastic back into “bright white”
- (for use on some plastics that have turned yellow over time)
- can potentially weaken the plastic, so be careful!
- DeoxIT for cleaning contacts (potentiometers, etc.)
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- dusting brushes, as mentioned previously
- compressed air: dial down the regulator so you don’t blast any fragile components too hard
Buy / Sell
John Walpole (K5ZY)

- k5zy@arrl.net and good on QRZ
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)

Rich Rychetsky (KI5QNR)
