Announcements / Comments
Question #110 for conversation: Have you ever provided emergency (EMCOMM) or auxiliary (AUXCOMM) communication service?
Bill Rose (K5WTR)
- Noise on repeater is due to some real big openings right now
- someone else on a repeater somewhere else with a different tone
- N5ZKF: agreed, some spectacular openings recently
Ron Hambric (N5SBN)
- 2023-01-16 18:30 ARES meeting (third Monday this month)
- CEOC visit Friday 09:00
- 110 N Main
- call us on KD5DLW or call phone number on wall
- regarding EMCOMM and AUXCOMM:
- good to be prepared: never know when or where you will need to step in
- can be assigned to conduct traffic handling on other frequencies (if authorized), not just amateur bands
Kevin Walton (K5BTX)
- weekly EMCOMM training for WinLink on Thursdays
- Compose draft to send to the area
- have signed up for AUXCOMM training (TDEM; 2023-02-24/26), but on a waitlist
Vic Pears (KX8V)
- worked EMCOMMs in Pennsylvania
- conducted several drills
- district coordinator, Northwest PA
- continuing to do so here in TX

Information Exchange
David Bailey (K5DKB)
- I know there are a lot of very knowledgeable people listening
- Have only recently picked up a Ham Radio myself
- Interesting “side effects” of playing on 20m and 10m band:
- Washing Machine un-/locks its lid
- Dishwasher starts cycle
- How can this interference be prevented
K5WTR
- RF in the house… Check that SWR is flat
- snap-on ferrite chokes on Appliance A/C line or on feed line at antenna
N5ZKF
- check out Palomar Engineering
- proper grounding
KG5SDF
- 6 or so feed line turns through a ferrite toroid
K5ZY
- make an air choke (just wrap coax around PVC or something)
- K5WTR: if you use a conductive item to make the choke, be sure to take it out
- does roof have metal lining? that might reflect RF into the house
- K5DKB: negative; signal is getting out just fine; air choke worked somewhat, but did not eliminate the problem
KX8V
- MFJ-915 RF line isolator (1:1 balun)
- contact me at 936-203-1444 if you’d like to try
KG5LYE
- power circuit isolation
- turn down the TX power
