Question for conversation: Do you terminate your own coax? If so, what type of terminators? Crimp or solder?
Dick Zimmer (W5DZ)
- prefer solder for both the braid and center pin
- better connection
- CEOC has had some problems with poorly crimped connections
- if you crimp, be sure you have the right tool.
Bill Rose (K5WTR)
- I solder my coax too
- (later): some thoughts on material: “bakelite brown,” nickel, silver, gold-plated
- https://ng3k.com has a useful list of Announced DX operations
Phil Gates (N5ZKF)
- I enjoy cutting cables to the right length and put the connectors I need on them
- Typically soldered, but I have crimp tools
- Type N, PL259
- what tool to use depends on cable and connector type
Travis Scott (KI5TMS)
- New product
- PL259 connector that can be removed and reused on a new cable.
- KG5LYE: I’ve seen those, but I’ve never needed to reuse them; once attached, they tend to stay put
